Money Scripts

By Josh Manifold | Principal | Advisor

There’s this thing called money scripts–core principles that we form around money, regardless of whether they’re true or accurate. We pick them up through experiences, family of origin, and other formative inputs. These govern far more of our lives than we often realize.

In my recent interview with Scott Hackman of Scott Hackman Ventures, we ventured off the professional topic list and talked about family money scripts. Scott’s insights are worth a few minutes to engage with:

  • How unhealthy scripts caused unhealthy financial behaviors
  • What challenged him to change his assumptions
  • How fulfilling healthy money scripts have strengthened his family

I think you’ll enjoy this excerpt. Also, a personal thank you to Scott for sharing so vulnerably.

Political Buy and Hold: We’ve mentioned it before, but as we inch into the last 36 days of the current Presidential election, we wanted to remind you of our perspective on long-term investing regardless of the outcome. The headlines will be tumultuous between now and November and well into 2025. We found this graphic as an interesting illustration of what it looks to buy and hold in political uncertainty:

Permission to Disconnect: Millions of Australians were officially permitted to ignore their bosses outside of working hours. A new law doesn’t strictly prohibit employers from calling or messaging their workers after hours. However, it does protect employees who “refuse to monitor, read or respond to contact or attempted contact outside of working hours, unless their refusal is unreasonable,” according to the Fair Work Commission. The goal is to help bring some work-life balance. The right to disconnect hasn’t reached the U.S. yet. A San Francisco assemblyman proposed legislation earlier this year that, if passed, would make California the first state in the country to do so.

We find the topic interesting because it affects how you think about your working years, goals, and financial future. What are your thoughts?

Clearly Explained: In the spirit of education, we found this chart a valuable tool in decoding the world of finance speak:
