DOUBLE JEOPARDY FOR STOCK COMPENSATION: Maybe your company stock started at 2% of your portfolio. Then it kept going up. Now it is 15%, maybe 20%. It’s not uncommon for us to meet people with 40%-50%+.

The problem is that the “worst-case scenario” is a double jeopardy: the event that threatens your job and the macroeconomic conditions that tank the stock are usually the same headline.

When we hear from a client worried about a layoff, the first thing we review is how much company stock they currently hold. Events that trigger layoffs do, at times, coincide with financial corrections. We don’t want to pack your paycheck and your parachute in the same bag.

If you’re reasonably worried about an economic slowdown, lagging company performance, or a possible layoff, now is the time to make sure your plan is ready. Our team is here to help you do this.

YOU ARE WHAT YOU CONSUME: Intra-year drawdowns are normal and common. Only your favorite news source is trying to convince you the world is ending- every year- not just this year. Same story with different headlines. You are what you consume. In the attention economy, knowing what to ignore leads to better outcomes.

EVERYONE IS TALKING ABOUT IPOS: This is interesting. Very interesting.

WHEN DO I NEED ADVICE?: Three moments when real financial planning becomes invaluable:

  1. Disaster: Job loss, medical crisis, divorce. Your careful plans evaporate overnight. We can help you triage, protect what matters, and find solid ground when everything feels uncertain.
  2. When everything goes right: The exit. The inheritance. The new role. Sudden wealth brings sudden complexity (and mistakes made here echo for decades). We can help you think clearly when new levels of opportunity and anxiety arrive together.
  3. When dreams die: The business plateaus. Retirement looks different from what you imagined. Your trajectory stalls. This might be the hardest moment of all: letting go of one story and leaning into a new one. We help you grieve what won’t be, then build something honest.

Major life shifts scramble our sense of what’s possible and what’s wise. We’ve seen it before. We believe we can help you navigate these transitions and work toward outcomes that matter to you.

THE COMPASS ION DISH: What if “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!” and “Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives” had a baby? Thank you, Andrew, for making a suggestion! Based on his idea, we are going to highlight a few local spots. As you travel this summer, feel free to reply here, and we’ll highlight your favorites—hoagies, coffee shops, bakeries, sticky buns, or ice cream. Local, national, or international—share your favorites!

This week’s destination by Josh Manifold: Capri Homemade Italian Ice in Wayne, PA. A quaint, little family-owned business serving water ice and soft service for your family. Bring your dog and order a “pup cup.” My favorite flavor is Lemon Peel with gelati.
